What’s most worrisome though, is that as users are exposed to news, they are more likely to believe and spread fake news than real news. According to Forbes Magazine, nearly 64.5% of the world’s users received their news from social media. Seventy nine percent – or nearly 250 million users – of Americans have a profile on at least one social media platform (Statista 2020). There are 3.5 billion active people on social media worldwide – this number is expected to rise to 4 billion by 2023. These posts have influenced, “informed”, and even empowered individuals and groups who may be predisposed to committing hate crimes against others because of the victims’ race, religion, gender, culture, sexual identity, age or disability. ![]() ![]() As social media platforms have continued to rise, so has the escalation of hate speech, bullying, racism, prejudice and offensive stereotypes about groups. We have the power to not only look introspectively to effect change, but to also support platforms and outlets that foster free speech while not stereotyping, insulting, denigrating, or inciting violence against others. The United States and countries around the world have awakened to a history of inequality and racism – millions are emphatic about the fact that we’ve had enough.
